Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet is delighted to welcome Finbar Coyle back to deliver this advanced course on picture book illustration.

In this advanced class, you’ll have the unique chance to receive personalised feedback and a Q&A session with a professional agent. To make the most of this opportunity, please come prepared with an idea or concept you’d like to develop during our first class.  Over the course of two evening sessions, your goal will be to create one standout piece. The gap between classes will allow time to provide individual video feedback and give space to refine your illustration before the second session.

What will this course cover?

Session 1: Concept Development & Composition

  • Defining a Concept:
    • Choose a compelling subject aligned with personal style and market demand.
  • Research & Inspiration:
    • Gather references and build mood boards for visual inspiration.
  • Composition & Sketching:
    • Focus on dynamic compositions and refining initial sketches.
  • Homework:
    • Refine the concept and submit a detailed sketch for the next session.
  • Video Tutorial Feedback:
  • Between Classes:
    • Personalized video feedback on concept sketches (Session 1).

Session 2: Final Illustration & Industry Insights

  • Execution Techniques:
    • Finalize the illustration with techniques for color, texture, lighting, and shading.
  • Feedback on Sketches:
    • Individual feedback on concept sketches and tips for refinement.
  • Portfolio Considerations:
    • Guidance on professional presentation and what agencies look for in portfolios.
  • Professional Illustration Agent Q&A with Will Drayson Senior Illustration Agent at Advocate Art:
    • Live session with a top illustration agent discussing industry trends and portfolio tips, followed by a Q&A.
  • Homework:
    • Complete and polish the final illustration for submission.
  • Post-Session 2:
    • Final review of portfolio pieces by students with feedback on polish and presentation.

Throughout the course, participants will engage in hands-on exercises, receive feedback from the instructor and their peers, and have the opportunity to explore their creativity in the exciting world of picture book illustration.

Tutor

Finbar Coyle

Finbar Coyle is a freelance illustrator and character designer with over a decade of experience in the animation industry, having worked in diverse roles such as animator, prop designer, and character designer. His notable animation design credits include serving as Prop Designer for “Danger Mouse” Season 1 Boulder Media/ CBeebies, 2D Designer for “Nella the Princess Knight”    for Brown Bag Films/Nick Jr, and Lead Character Designer for “Alva’s World” for Kavaleer/RTE  among others.

Currently based in Cologne Germany, Finbar specializes in visual storytelling, seamlessly blending his skills as an illustrator and a member of design studios. Represented by Advocate Art, he has created captivating picture books for Penguin Random House and designed immersive worlds for leading board game companies in Europe and the US.

In addition to his creative work, Finbar shares his expertise through talks and workshops on character design and picture book illustration.
