Overview
Under its Skills Connect initiative Cultural and Creative Industries Skillnet presents an Introduction to Film Production course that will run from the 22nd June to the 14th August.
This FREE course is being presented in association with Creative Heartlands and is available to people in the North West region who are unemployed or underemployed.
The course will be delivered by three experienced practitioners in the film industry and will include tuition in all aspects of film production:
- Design – Interpreting a script; deciding on a look in Costume and Production Design; Preparation of Mood Boards. Breaking down a script and developing a work-flow.
- Direction – Shot listing and the language of different shots; working with actors; directing a scene; “crossing the line”.
- Production – Breaking down a short film script and preparing a schedule; creating short form budgets for short drama and documentary.
- Camera – Learn how to handle a cine camera; lenses, exposure, data management
- Lighting – Handling and setting lights. How to light a scene employing different lighting techniques eg Three-Point Lighting.
- Scriptwriting – Scripting for short drama and documentary
- Sound Recording – How to record clean sound. The different kinds of mics and their purposes.
- Post Production (Editing). Introduction to Da Vinci Resolve. Developing a workflow. How to edit a scene?
A key aspect of the course is the making of a short film production which will be crewed primarily by course participants. This course is heavily focused on developing participants’ technical proficiency and ability to work in a crew setting.
The course requires a minimum weekly 25-hour commitment from participants which will increase during Prep and Shoot weeks. No previous film industry experience is required.
Venue
Ballymote, Co Sligo. Ballymote was chosen due to it’s bus and train links making it accessible to many people in the north west region.
Fee

Tutor Profiles

Johnny Gogan is the producer, writer and director of over twenty fiction and documentary films, including the feature documentary Hubert Butler Witness to the Future (2016) and the feature drama Black Ice (2013), both of which are currently distributed on Netflix and Disney+. His tv documentaries include Gineadóir and Stáit (2015) and The Leitrim Equation (2017), both for TG4. He has recently completed the documentary Behind the Lines, about Irish involvement in the Spanish Civil War and the short drama The Curse (2025).

Amy O’Hara is a costume designer and seamstress with over 30 years’ experience in film, theatre and street performance. She brings characters and stories to life through intricate fabric work and detailed craftsmanship. Her film credits include costume and props for Clea van der Grijn’s “Eliza’s Adventures in Wonderland” which was the recipient of the Authored Works Award in 2023.
Amy is also a dedicated teacher in sewing, upcycling and design skills. In 2025 she taught on the inaugural Leitrim Film Development Course, mentoring emerging film makers in production design and costume.
In addition, there will be tuition in Sound Recording, Camera and Lighting delivered by visiting tutors
Participant Profile
Applicants must be unemployed and underemployed and is suitable for School Leavers, people experienced in Trades, Business and other Arts disciplines with transferable skills suited to film production. No previous film industry experience is required.
