Overview

In this bespoke, comprehensive course, delivered by the highly experienced, IFTA nominated, director Diarmuid Goggins, you will acquire the vital skills needed to successfully pitch and direct high-end episodic television projects. This program will equip you with the tools to navigate the competitive landscape of the industry.

From structuring compelling pitches to understanding the nuances of directing episodic content, you will gain practical insights and creative strategies.

The course is limited to 12 participants so that each participant will get individual attention in the execution of the practical exercises.

What will this course cover?

This four day course will include two classroom days and two practical day.  On the practical days each participant will direct a scene that will be recorded and reviewed.

At the end of the course each participant should be able to:

Learning outcomes

  • Pitch for a job
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of a drama director and the relationship of the producer and the HODs
  • Explain the creative and technical aspects of Directing Drama
  • Analyse a script, break it down and create director’s notes
  • Demonstrate how to block, stage and choreograph a scene for one and two cameras
  • Explain how to complete a shooting schedule whilst delivering on story and performance
  • Prepare for and conduct a session casting
  • Explain how to direct and work with actors

Participant profile/Who can apply/Eligibility

Applicants will need to have directed a drama short, documentary or other TV series work. Ideally candidates will have worked as a director on TV singles or series or commercials and are looking to step up to high end TV drama or indeed break into TV drama.

Applicants who have not worked professionally but have directed a number of shorts and can display an enthusiasm and knowledge of directing may be considered.

This is not an entry level course.

Tutor information

Diarmuid Goggins is an IFTA-nominated director for Film and TV Drama. He directed the pilot episode of KIN for Bron Studios and AMC+. His other lead director credits include the Netflix No 1 show WITNESS NUMBER 3, BULLETPROOF for Sky Studios and The CW Network and multiple episodes of the BBC series SILENT WITNESS. His latest show, THE NIGHT CALLER, will air in the summer of 2024.
