Overview
This training programme, run in partnership with the National Talent Academies, Crew Academy South, and in collaboration with TVM Outside Broadcast Facilities, is being run to address the shortage of skilled Camera Operators in the multi-camera Studio and Outside Broadcast sectors.
The programme is led by experienced television professionals, is designed to help Camera Assistants enhance their skills and prepare for operating roles.
Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the roles in the camera department, learn to work effectively with other departments, and leave with enhanced skills and enthusiasm, contributing to the pool of freelance talent in Ireland.

What will this course cover?
- Classroom Learning:
- One day of discussions covering:
- Studio and location health and safety
- Camera rigging and setup
- Studio etiquette
- Basic television grammar theory
- Collaboration with Directors and Producers f
- Practical Studio Training:
- Three days in the studio to apply theoretical knowledge, guided by seasoned operators.
- Techniques for various show formats, including magazine, chat interviews, game shows, music, entertainment, and sports.
- Tips and techniques perfected by experienced operators over years in the industry.
- Outside Broadcast Days:
- 1 x day on a sporting event shadowing and operating
- 1 x day recreating a sporting event with a support crew operating cameras
Participant profile/Who can apply/Eligibility
Applicants must have a minimum of 18 months experience as a camera assistant, ideally in a multi-camera environment. This course might appeal to people, with relevant experience, returning to the workforce.

Peter Corrigan has worked in the Broadcast Industry for over 35 years. He has worked for all the major broadcasters in Ireland and England, including RTE and the BBC as well as a huge number of US broadcasters. He is currently the President of the new Broadcast Professionals Guild of Ireland and the head of Broadcast Professionals Union Group.
Nigel Saunders spent 33 years at BBC Television Centre, starting as a Trainee Camera Assistant and becoming a leading Camera Supervisor on music, light entertainment, chat, and game shows, as well as dramas. Since 2010, he has been a freelance supervisor and operator, working on prestigious productions and events worldwide.
At the BBC, Nigel pioneered the use of technocranes and jibs, setting industry standards. He also trained many camera assistants and junior operators, some of whom are now Camera Supervisors on major productions. He hosted work experience days for university students and aspiring industry professionals.
Nigel’s recent work includes Pointless, Gladiators, The Wheel, The Festival of Remembrance, Dancing with the Stars, and The Olivier Awards. Career highlights include The Eurovision Song Contest, three Royal Weddings, Top of the Pops, Parkinson Chat Show, Noel’s House Party, Jonathan Ross Show, and the MTV Awards.
Mick Whelan is a television camera operator and jimmy jib owner operator. He has been supplying and operating jibs on light entertainment, tv drama, commercials, sport, and feature films, since 2001.

12noon on Monday 6th January 2024. Due to the tight turnaround suitably qualified applicants will be awarded a place on a first come basis. Therefore, we may stop accepting applications before the deadline date.
