What will this course cover?
Session 2: Collection Account Management Agreements (CAMA)
A Collection Account Management Agreement (CAMA) is a legal arrangement that appoints an independent third party to collect and distribute revenues from a film or TV project. It ensures transparent, fair, and timely payments to all entitled parties—such as investors, talent, and rights holders—based on a pre-agreed revenue waterfall. CAMAs are often required by financiers and sales agents to reduce risk and avoid disputes over revenue sharing.
For this session, Catherine and Robert are pleased to welcome Daniel Simonyi, a guest speaker from Freeway Entertainment. Daniel is Head of Legal at Freeway’s Collection Account Management division, a leading provider of revenue sharing and reporting solutions for the global film and television industry. Freeway supports over 9,000 productions worldwide, ensuring transparency, impartiality, and efficiency in the distribution of revenues. Daniel oversees all legal aspects of collection account arrangements, including the negotiation and coordination of contractual frameworks with producers, talent, financiers, and other stakeholders. He joined Freeway in 2012. Prior to that, he practiced law for six years at New York based law firm Weil (first in Washington DC, then in Budapest, Hungary), focusing on complex commercial and financial matters. Daniel began his career in public service, working in the Cabinet of the Hungarian Minister for European Affairs, where he was involved in the oversight of EU fund allocation in Hungary. Daniel holds law degrees from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (2003) and Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest (2005). He was admitted to the Budapest Bar in 2010. Daniel has two children and lives in Brussels, Belgium.
The session will examine the following key aspects of Collection Account Management Agreements (CAMAs):
- What a CAMA is – its purpose, structure, and the role of the Collection Account Manager.
- Why CAMAs are needed – benefits for producers, financiers, and participants, including transparency and trust.
- How revenue waterfalls work – the order and logic of revenue distribution.
- When and where CAMAs are used – common scenarios in film, TV, and international sales.
- Key stakeholders and obligations – who gets paid, when, and under what terms.
- Legal and contractual considerations – standard clauses, audit rights, and enforcement.
- Best practices and common pitfalls – tips for negotiating and managing a successful CAMA.
It should be noted that these workshops are educational in nature and should not be considered legal advice specific to your circumstances. If you need assistance, you should always consult independent legal advice.
