Session 6: Exploring Market Opportunities in Japan’s Film Industry

Please note: This session will be pre-recorded and will be made available to view from Tuesday, 9th December until Friday, 19th December 2025.

For our final Lunch and Learn of 2025 join us for an in-depth lunchtime session focusing on Japan.

For this session we are delighted to be joined by Hiroyuki Tanimoto from VIPO in Tokyo.

Founded in 2005, the Visual Industry Promotion Organization (VIPO) is a Tokyo-based non-profit that supports the Japanese content industry across cinema, anime, publishing, music, and gaming. VIPO operates one of the subsidies (JLOX+) under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and runs various international partnerships, development workshops, and funding programs often in collaboration with prestigious global festivals and markets such as Cannes and Berlin.

In this session, we will explore the unique opportunities and challenges of the Japanese film market, including key business strategies, distribution channels, co-production models, legal and regulatory considerations, and practical tips to successfully navigate partnerships and expand your projects in Japan.

It should be noted that these workshops are educational in nature and should not be considered legal advice specific to your circumstances. If you need assistance, you should always consult independent legal advice.

Participant profile

This series of lunchtime workshops will help creatives, producers, management, and administrative personnel understand how the law and animation interact.
