Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet, Animation Ireland, and The National Talent Academy for Animation are excited to welcome master animator Mike Nguyen (The Iron Giant, Beauty and the Beast) to Dublin to present this masterclass.
WHAT WILL THIS MASTERCLASS COVER?
This presentation aims to inspire a mindset to examine the underlying qualities that define a ‘living character’ in an animated endeavour, exploring the personalities that enable a character to be endearing and compelling to viewers and a pathway to achieving such living animated beings.
After the talk, there will be a brief live animation demo and a presentation of Mike’s work-in-progress 2D feature film ‘My Little World’ in its clean-up stage (now in its 25th year in the making).

TUTOR
Mike Nguyen received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Character Animation from the California
Institute of the Arts in 1988. Since then, he has worked primarily in the feature animation
industry in the USA as a Character Animator in various studios, including Walt Disney,
Warner Bros., and DreamWorks Animation. Among the films he has worked on are
the critically acclaimed “The Iron Giant” as a supervising animator.
In 2000, he co-founded July Films, an independent theatrical animation production
company and his directing debut is the theatrical animated feature entitled “My Little
World”, currently in production.
He was also a Character Animation instructor at the California Institute of the Arts
from 1994 to 2010, and has also given frequent animation workshops in Denmark,
Ireland, Thailand, Taiwan and Korea. He is currently a professor at the Chungkang
College of Cultural Industries in the Animation Department.
His primary interest is the hand-drawn animation filmmaking medium and he aims to reflect
beautiful thoughts toward this life on Earth.
