Overview

Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet are delighted to welcome back Aidan McAteer to deliver this online course on “Storyboarding for Animation”.

This 7 week course, will teach the fundamentals of visual storytelling and an approach to storyboarding various types of sequences, to help those interested in building a storyboard portfolio. The course will include an individual 20 minute one-to-one session with each student in Week 6.

What will this course cover?

  • Wk 1: Approach to Storyboarding – the technical stuff.
  • Wk 2: Visual Storytelling – clarity and emotion.
  • Wk 3: Boarding Action Sequences.
  • Wk 4: Boarding Comedy Sequences.
  • Wk 5: Boarding Dramatic Sequences.
  • Wk 6: 1:1 Reviews.
  • Wk 7: Portfolios & Professional Practice.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should understand the basics of visual storytelling and how to approach and storyboard a variety of sequences to present in a portfolio.

Participant profile

This course is aimed at aspiring students, storyboard artists, and anyone who is interested in the animation pre-production process and/or looking for insight from a storyboard artist and director’s point of view. A good grasp of drawing skills, perspective and a basic understanding of film language is recommended. The course is best suited to beginning and intermediate levels artists.

Tutor

Aidan McAteer has two decades of experience in the animation industry working as an animator, storyboard artist, writer and director. He was the storyboard supervisor on the recent Cartoon Saloon feature film “Puffin Rock and the New Friends” and has directed on the TV shows “Danger Mouse”, “Oddbods”, “Transformers: Rescue Bots Academy” and has made several award-winning short films.

Materials/equipment/software needed

Courses will be taking place online using the Zoom. Participants will need to have a good internet connection.

Familiarity with any digital art package such as Storyboard Pro, Photoshop, Procreate, TV Paint, Clip Studio Paint or similar is recommended.
