Overview

Take your Toon Boom skills to the next level with one of these intermediate courses from Adam’s Animation Academy. It’s a perfect follow-up for anyone who has beginner’s knowledge of the software and is looking to hone their skills and maybe gain a job in the industry.

Choosing either the Animation or Rigging course, you’ll join others in a small group as you take 6 x weekly live classes to work on a showreel piece or rig build of your own. You will be guided with feedback at various stages of your project, as well as best practices for presenting it to potential employers.

The live video sessions will take place on Monday or Tuesday evenings* 7.30pm – 9pm GMT. All sessions will be recorded and available to review if you can’t attend live, as well as supporting material and resources to help you build a fantastic portfolio!

*Monday is the animation class, Tuesday is rigging.

The class includes a license of Toon Boom Harmony Premium to cover the length of the training, links to free resources and designs to make your project with and a certificate upon completion. Individuals also receive access to an online community to share and discuss their projects, taking you beyond the training and extending your professional network.

What will this course cover?

  • The Animation course will focus on improving your character animation and performance with rigged (cut-out) characters. By analysing any work or showreel you’ve produced already, you will be given suggestions of ideas you could develop. This in turn helps increase the range of skills on display in your showreel.
  • The Rigging course will go from start to finish on how to build a professional production rig. We’ll go over the considerations from the design, looking at the new tools in Harmony 22 and what is useful for the needs of the animator. Over the weeks we’ll build the rig gradually, with stepped versions available for anyone who misses a session (so no-one gets left behind!). We’ll end up with a turnaround rig utilising tools like master controllers and more of the latest techniques to showcase your rigging skillset. Participants are welcome to work on a design of their choice, if they would prefer that to the one the course provides.

Learning Outcomes

Animation – Improvement to character animation skills and potentially a new piece for the showreel, demonstrating strong acting and performance.

Rigging – A newly built rig showcasing technical and creative problem solving, with the potential addition of a rigging build walkthrough video, useful for showreels.

Participant profile

This course is aimed at those with a beginners+ knowledge. Someone with greater experience may wish to join if they like the idea of understanding a different discipline (for example, currently an animator and would like to know how to rig). The only candidate who would not be suited is a complete beginner in animation or total newcomer to the software, Toon Boom Harmony.

Tutor

Adam Oliver will be your guide throughout this class, drawing upon over 15 years of work within the animation industry as well as his extensive training experience under Adam’s Animation Academy and in studios worldwide.

Materials/equipment/software needed

Access to Toon Boom Harmony will be provided. You will need a good WiFi connection as the classes will be taking place on Zoom. An inexpensive pen tablet is optional but makes creating assets much easier.
